BCHS footballers are league champions

Brentwood County High School’s Football Development Programme, delivered in partnership with West Ham United Foundation last week celebrated English College FA League victory for the 2017/18 season. The Sixth Form programme took part in the Category 3 ECFA League from September 2017 through until May 2018, finishing up winning the title – 2 points ahead of the closest rivals.

The season was capped with an emphatic 14-0 performance against local rivals Leyton Orient, culminating in 8 wins from 12 games. The students on the programme have seen fantastic progress across the course of the football season, juggling A-Level and BTEC studies, whilst committing to training twice-weekly in addition to league and cup fixtures. Perhaps more impressive is the fact that squad is almost exclusively made up of Year 12 students, who have predominantly competed against players at least a year older throughout the season. This also means the majority of the boys can carry their success through to the forthcoming 2018/19 campaign, with the addition of the new Year 12 recruits to bolster the current squad.

The team’s West Ham Foundation coach, Craig Smith noted: “the progress seen with the current group, building on the foundations laid in the previous year has been tremendous, we have been able to define a clear style of play and a flexible playing system that has resulted in overall success. The players have become a tight-knit bunch socially, many of whom had only met for the first time during trials for the football programme last summer and this is testament to the positive and inclusive attitude they have applied during their time on the programme.”

Mr. J. Callender Head of School said “This is an amazing achievement and I would like to publically congratulate the coach Craig Smith and all the players for their commitment, hard work and dedication. The journey the students have been on is testament to their attitude towards the programme whilst staying on top of their studies.

A partnership with West Ham is something Brentwood County High are looking to embed into the whole school so all our pupils have access to the experience of skilled coaches like Craig.”
