What is it to be a Computer Scientist at BCHS?

The most important aspect of computer science is problem solving, an essential skill for life. Students study the design, development and analysis of software and hardware used to solve problems in a variety of business, scientific and social contexts. Because computers solve problems to serve people, there is a significant human side to computer science as well.

Subject Overview - Year 7-11

Year 7 - 8

This will be a bespoke curriculum that at first ensures that all students understand how to use a computer, and use it safely and appropriately.

After learning the correct use of a computer, KS3 students will progress to learn a basic understanding of different areas from the GCSE specification.

This will help them decide if Computer Science at GCSE is for them.

Year 9-11

We will be working on the OCR specification of GCSE Computer Science. This means:

  • Two papers, one focusing on computer systems and one with a focus on programming, computational thinking, and algorithms.
  • Encourages valuable thinking and programming skills that are extremely attractive in the modern workplace

Enrichment

What BCHS offers that most schools do not is our ability to deliver a variety of programming languages.

  • During KS3 you will learn how to program using Python
  • During KS4 you will learn how to program in VB.net
  • During KS5 you will learn to program in C# and PHP

This coupled with a fantastic curriculum and dedicated teachers means that anyone wanting to progress in Computer Science will leave BCHS with every advantage.
