01.07.201355At BCHS we pride ourselves on offering our young people a wide range of educational visits throughout the year in all year groups. In addition to the big trips which take place during school holidays and the activity week trips held in year 7 and year 12, there are numerous one day visits to galleries, museums, exhibitions and many other places. In order for these to take place the teachers involved have to leave cover for their lessons which is provided either by our team of cover supervisors or by other teachers. Over the last year it has become increasingly evident to me that this is more and more of a challenge to manage. Like all schools we have had to reduce the overall capacity of our teaching staff in order to save money. We have also reduced our number of cover supervisors for 2016-2017 meaning that we have a lower capacity to provide cover for lessons when teachers are absent.

With this in mind, and the fact that we are absolutely committed to providing the widest possible range of educational visits for our students, we have decided to streamline the way we deliver our educational visits in 2016-2017. There will be six educational visits days spread throughout the year. This will be one per term. On each of these days every student in the school will be involved either in an educational visit away from BCHS, or there will be a day of activities in school for a whole year group which provides wider education in areas such as careers, study skills, sex and relationships, e-safety, life skills, mental health or anti-bullying.

By having these six educational visits days spread through the year we will reduce the impact of school trips on the curriculum as a whole and reduce the need for lessons to be covered. There will of course still be some occasions when trips have to happen on other days due to opportunities only being available on set days such as revision workshops, arts exhibitions or theatre productions. However these will be the exception and not the rule.

The six dates for the educational visits days in 2016-2017 are:

Term 1: Thursday 30th September 2016

Term 2: Tuesday 22nd November 2016

Term 3: Friday 2nd February 2017

Term 4: Thursday 23rd March 2017

Term 5: Wednesday 24th March 2017

Term 6: Tuesday 27th June 2017
