Former student chosen to take part in National Commemoration Event

Her Majesty's Government has invited Rebecca Dunning, who studied at Brentwood County High School until 2017, to take part in the National Commemoration of 100 years since the end of the First World War event on 11th November 2018.  She will be a member of a group of three young people who will lay flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Westminster Abbey.  The service will be televised on the BBC and the order of service will include a description of why Rebecca was selected to take part in the service.

As a Football Association Apprentice, Rebecca joined the Tull100 – Football Remembers Youth Advisory Group to commemorate footballer, Second Lieutenant Walter Tull, who was killed at the First Battle of Bapaume on 25 March 1918, aged 29. Commemorated on the Arras Memorial, he was one of the first infantry officers of black heritage in the modern British Army.  Drawing on her experience of women's football, Rebecca helped to form the central message of the Tull100 project, No Barriers. She also featured on the Social Media campaign with England footballers, Dele Alli, Kieran Trippier and Danny Rose.

Rebecca developed her interest for History during her GCSE classes with Mr Callow and has told us that her interest developed further whilst studying A level history with Mr Callow, Mr Nicholas and Mr Walker.  Rebecca describes her History teachers as “inspirational”.

Miss Margaret Ryan, Head of School said “We are delighted that Rebecca has been chosen to take part in this historic event. It will truly be a deeply moving occasion, one that I am sure will not be forgotten”.
