Why study Spanish in the Sixth Form?

“I think languages just set you free.” (Language undergraduate)

Spanish is spoken by approximately 405 million people as a native language, making it second only to Mandarin in terms of its number of native speakers worldwide.  By studying it at A level you are opening up a wealth of opportunities for your future!  At As and A2 level you will gain profound understanding of the mechanics of the Spanish language and how people live and use language on a daily basis.  Topics covered at AS level are Media, Popular Culture, Healthy Living/Lifestyle and Family relationships.  At A2 level you will study four more topics:- Environment, the Multicultural Society and Contemporary Social Issues.  You will need to do independent research and background reading for each topic using text books, on-line resources and publications.

Where can Spanish take me in the future?

Apart from being of considerable personal benefit to yourself for travelling and communicating, an A level in Modern Foreign Languages can help you with quite a few career paths, some of which can be very lucrative! For example, you could become a translator or teacher or work in the travel and tourism industry.  Moreover, languages can be combined with more practical subjects such as engineering or designing.  Commerce and banking, law, marketing, secretarial work, sport and leisure, tv and radio are all areas where language knowledge can help you significantly.
