Why study in the Sixth Form?

This course is equivalent to three ‘A’ levels and can be studied as an alternative to A-Level Physical Education.  It will provide opportunities for the students to develop personal qualities of leadership, responsibility, commitment and team work in a range of practical and academic situations.

The course involves theory and practical elements.   The practical specification aims to provide candidates with the knowledge and understanding to improve their own and others’ performances.  This can be through participating and/or competing in sport, organising sport events and evaluating and analysing sport performances.

During the two year course you will study the following topics:  Principles of Anatomy & Physiology, Fitness Training & Programming, Fitness Testing and Sport Exercise, The Physiology of Fitness, Sports Coaching, Practical individual sport, Assessing Risk in Sport, Sports Development plus, Physical Education and the Care of Young People, Instructing Physical activity & Exercise, Organising Sports Events, Outdoor & Adventurous Activities, Sports Injuries, Work experience in Sport, Sports Nutrition,  Leadership in Sport, Current Issues in Sport, Exercise, Health and Lifestyle, and Rules, Regulations & Officiating in Sport.

This course is the equivalent of 3 A2 level passes.

This is all assessed via a portfolio of work – there are no exams.

Where can take me in the future?

Completion of the BTEC course offers the opportunity to continue to study via a wide range of sport related degree courses.   It also offers the opportunity to enter the workplace in one of the fastest growing industries – leisure and recreation via coaching, personal training or sports management.
